I had been a manager in the health system in Australia and knew of the need for sun protection, particularly in the early years of life. My children had been taught to wear hats at preschool and school in Australia. (In Australian schools, children are required to wear hats for sun protection. Such policies and practices have existed in Australia for over a decade and have been successful in reducing skin cancers in adolescents.) I wanted my children still to be protected from the sun at school in America and I knew the best way was to wear sun protection hats. Many other parents at the school supported the idea, but the only sun protection hats that were available were expensive and not designed for children and everyday wear. This is how School Sun Hats began.

Since then, many parents from around the world have contacted me to ask how they can also protect their children at school, I love hearing from these parents and there is always something that can be done. I believe 100% in what I do and I am keen to support other parents who want to protect their children from the sun.
